Student Council

The first meeting of the Student Council was called to order by the President, Robert Beken, on Tuesday, September 9, 1947.

One of the first and most important problems we tackled this year was that of setting up a list of requirements for those who wished to go on the West Point trip and to out-of-town basketball games. These requirements were based on good citizenship.

This year the Student Council started a new precedent (or rather we hope it did), of Student Day. Student Day was held on March 5th. For one whole day the students had charge of the school. Fred Knise was chosen student principal and each class chose its respective teachers.

This year the Student Council again sponsored the Annual Athletic Banquet, which was held April 16, 1948.

The constitution of the Delaware County Student Council was approved this fall, and Robert Beken of our school was elected Vice-President of this organization. Erma VerNooy and Hellen Marie King were chosen to represent South Kortright Central at all county meetings. This organization of the Student councils from Delaware County got a good start this year, and we hope it will continue to do good work next year.

Future Farmers of America

The South Kortright Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, composed of 27 members in school and five out of school members, has had a very successful year.

At the Delaware County Fair last summer, Paul Denman placed second in the Better Milking Contest. Our chapter also won over $100 in price money at the fair.

In October, Mr. Palm, Edward Nichols and George Robertson, State Reporter, attended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

On October 17 and 18 Robert Martin attended the Eastern States Expedition in Springfield, Mass. Robert had won second price in the State Poultry Judging contest, which gave him the privilege to represent New York State at the Expedition.

On January 16th Mahlon Weeler, Edward Nichols, Kenneth MacLaury, Roland Dibble, Ambrose DeMoise and our advisor, Mr. Palm, presented a skit written by Edward Nichols entitled "Fire and Safety Control", over station WGY.

On February 28th five members of the Judging team placed third in the county contest held at Delhi Ag. School.

On March 25th we attended the county wide spring rally at Delhi, where we won the 1948 basketball championship for the third successive year. Howard Nichols was elected County President and Ambrose DeMoise, Reporter, for the year 1947-48.

We held our annual Father and Son Banquet on April 9th with Mr. Coulter as our speaker. At this banquet, Dr. James Hatch, State FFA Advisor, presented the certificate of Honorable Mention, which our chapter had won at the National Chapter contest, to President Kenneth MacLaury.
