Memoriam

"Thou were the Morning Star
Among the living
Ere they fair light had fled.
Now having died thou art
as Hesperus giving
New splendour to the dead."

History of South Kortright Central School

The South Kortright Central School had its origin on July 16, 1935. At this time the idea was presented to the Hobart Board of Education that a central school be built somewhere between Delhi and Stamford. A pamphlet describing the plan in detail was issued in the fall of 1935. During the remainder of the year and during 1936, the plan was thoroughly discussed and explained throughout the area.

On July 7, 1937, application was made by the Hobart School for a P.W.A. grant. On June 24, 1938, The Hobart board received a grant of $132,750. On August 11, 1938, the State Education Department laid out a Central District and on August 24, the South Kortright Central School was established by vote of the district. A Board of Education was established and was elected.

In September a $248,000 bond was issued for erection of the new building and a garage. The site was selected on the Thompson Farm between Hobart and South Kortright. On December 7, 1938, construction of the new building was begun. May 26, 1939, was the date that the cornerstone was laid.

Construction of the school building was done by Joseph Bisceglio and Sons of Harrison, New York, and the garage was done by Christensen and Nielsen of Schenectady, New York.
